Myanmar is facing one of its most severe conflicts and humanitarian crises in recent history, triggered by the military coup on February 1, 2021. The overthrow of the democratically elected government, led by Aung San Suu Kyi National League for Democracy (NLD), plunged the country into political chaos, civil unrest, and widespread violence. The military, known as the Tatmadaw, seized power claiming election fraud in the 2020 elections, sparking mass protests and civil disobedience across the nation. The junta brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstrations led to thousands of deaths, arbitrary detentions, and human rights violations. The military violent suppression of dissent has escalated into armed conflict, with ethnic armed groups and newly formed resistance forces, such as the People Defence Force (PDF), waging a growing insurgency. As conflict intensifies, civilians bear the brunt of the violence. Entire villages have been bombed and burned, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee their homes. The United Nations estimates that over 1.6 million people have been displaced since the coup, with many seeking refuge in neighbouring Thailand, India, and Bangladesh. Camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) are overcrowded and under resourced, with limited access to food, clean water, and healthcare. The COVID 19 pandemic has only worsened the dire conditions, as Myanmar healthcare system collapses under military control. The humanitarian crisis is exacerbated by the military systematic attacks on aid organizations, restricting access to vital assistance in conflict zones. Reports of targeted violence against aid workers and road blockages have made it nearly impossible for relief efforts to reach those in need. International organisations, including the UN, have repeatedly called for ceasefires to allow humanitarian aid to reach affected regions, but the military has largely ignored these pleas. Ethnic minorities, especially the Rohingya, continue to suffer disproportionately.
