In the digital age, social media platforms have transformed communication, information sharing, and public discourse. However, the rise of misinformation, hate speech, and online harassment has prompted governments worldwide to take action, seeking to regulate content on these platforms and ensure a safer online environment. The urgency for regulation became particularly apparent during major global events, such as elections and the COVID-19 pandemic, where misinformation spread rapidly, undermining public trust and safety. In response, many governments have proposed or enacted legislation aimed at holding social media companies accountable for the content hosted on their platforms. In the European Union, the Digital Services Act (DSA) represents a landmark effort to regulate online content. This legislation requires platforms to take stronger measures against harmful content, enhance transparency regarding content moderation, and provide users with better avenues for recourse. The DSA emphasizes the responsibility of tech companies to manage the spread of misinformation while protecting freedom of expression. In the United States, debates around social media regulation are ongoing. While some lawmakers advocate for stronger regulations to combat misinformation and protect user data, others argue that such measures could infringe on free speech. High-profile hearings featuring tech CEOs have underscored the need for accountability while highlighting the complexities of regulating platforms that serve billions globally. Countries like Australia and India have also introduced laws targeting social media companies. Australia’s News Media Bargaining Code mandates that platforms negotiate with news organizations for fair compensation, while India’s new IT rules require platforms to take down harmful content swiftly and appoint compliance officers to address grievances. Despite these efforts, challenges persist. The rapid pace of technological innovation often outstrips legislative processes, making it difficult for laws to keep up.
